Enhancing Access and Stewardship at Red Canyon Park
Red Canyon Park, located along the Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway near Cañon City, offers striking red-rock scenery and connects to popular OHV opportunities. User-created campsites, social trails, and aging facilities had begun to impact resources and the visitor experience.
Following extensive local engagement by the Red Canyon Trails Committee, the City of Cañon City invested in a formal trail network (including an accessible loop). Peak Exceptionalism builds on that foundation by supporting development of 15 accessible campsites, upgraded vault toilets, road drainage and resurfacing, shelter improvements, and a sustainable camping-fee program with a campground host.
Q2 2026 Progress All agreements have been approved. Campground construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
The project will deliver quality, managed camping while protecting sensitive resources and creating a self-sustaining maintenance model—directly benefiting Fremont County visitors and advancing the regional camping and stewardship goals of Peak Exceptionalism.
