PPO Partners with Adventures Out West

Thank You, Adventures Out West: A Half-Century of Pikes Peak Adventure and Stewardship

At Pikes Peak Outdoors (PPO), we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of our valued partners, Adventures Out West (AOW). For more than 50 years, AOW has been a cornerstone of outdoor recreation in the Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak region, delivering unforgettable experiences that showcase the beauty, history, and thrill of our mountain landscape. Their longstanding support helps advance our shared mission of enhancing recreation access, promoting conservation, and strengthening the economic and community benefits of outdoor activities.

Founded in 1973 by Bruce and Patty Wellens—former Breckenridge Ski Patrol volunteers with a passion for adventure—AOW began with pioneering commercial hot air balloon operations. Bruce served as captain and Patty as crew chief, chasing balloons across Arizona and Colorado while raising three boys immersed in ballooning, skiing, hunting, Jeep exploration, and horseback riding. This deep local knowledge became the foundation of the family business.

In 2003, the second generation, led by Greg Wellens (known as “Captain Gee Dub”), took the helm and expanded the offerings dramatically. Today, AOW provides a full spectrum of iconic adventures, including:

  • Hot air balloon rides that offer breathtaking sunrise or sunset views over the plains, mountains, and high country.
  • Custom 4×4 Jeep tours exploring Pikes Peak’s summit, Garden of the Gods, and hidden foothills routes with knowledgeable guides sharing geology, history, and local lore.
  • Zipline tours on natural-terrain courses in Manitou Springs, where participants soar over cliffs and canyons in a thrilling, all-abilities-friendly experience.
  • Mountain bike and e-bike tours, including unforgettable descents from the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak.
  • Additional options like Segway tours, guided hikes, and combo packages that combine multiple activities for a full day of adventure.

What sets AOW apart is their multi-generational family legacy. Third-generation family members now contribute to zipline and balloon crews, while the company maintains a large seasonal team dedicated to safety, guest experience, and environmental respect. Hundreds of thousands of visitors—and countless locals—have trusted AOW’s expert guides, custom equipment, and commitment to creating lifelong memories.

The Wellens family’s story is deeply intertwined with both recreation and conservation in the Pikes Peak region. By providing responsible, guided access to our public lands and natural wonders, AOW helps foster appreciation and stewardship—values at the heart of PPORA’s work. Whether advocating for trails like Ring the Peak, pursuing grants for enhanced access, or promoting equitable outdoor opportunities, PPORA aligns perfectly with AOW’s ethos of celebrating and protecting the places we play.

We encourage everyone—residents, families, and visitors alike—to add Adventures Out West to your must-do list. Book a balloon flight at dawn, tackle a Jeep adventure through red rock formations, or zip through the canyons for an adrenaline rush you’ll never forget. These experiences not only create joy but also support the local outdoor economy and the conservation efforts that sustain it.

Thank you, Adventures Out West, for your decades of excellence and your partnership in making the Pikes Peak region a world-class outdoor destination.
