Dome Rock Bighorn Sheep Habitat

Protecting a Tier-1 Herd: Habitat Work at Dome Rock State Wildlife Area

The Pikes Peak bighorn sheep herd is a Tier-1 conservation priority due to its size, endemic history, and limited outside introductions. The herd faces significant challenges from respiratory pathogens. Providing secure refuge, especially during lambing season, and reducing disease transmission risk are critical.

Peak Exceptionalism supports treatment of approximately 300 acres of dry mixed-conifer forest at Dome Rock State Wildlife Area through a combination of hand and mechanical thinning. The work will open canopy, increase forage, diversify forest structure, improve lambing habitat away from high-use areas, and reduce wildfire risk near nearby subdivisions.

Q2 2026 Progress Agreements are in place. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has provided an additional $300,000 (with potential for $150,000 more). Implementation is planned for spring 2027.

This project delivers dual benefits for wildlife and wildfire resilience while supporting the broader Ring the Peak corridor conservation goals. Monitoring of vegetation and wildlife response will be conducted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
